River Tweed River Report Week Ending 27th May 2017 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 27th May

The week started off with good fishing weather and some reasonable catches before we were hit with very hot and sunny weather from Wednesday. Temperatures reached 30 degrees in the second half of the week which made catching fish much harder, but the beats who were out fishing early while it was a bit cooler reported a few fish, many of them with sea liced.

Above Kelso catches were unsurprisingly quiet, Middle Mertoun having the best fishing with 9 for the week. Middle Pavillion 2 and Lower Pavillion with 4 also enjoyed the limited success.

Between Kelso and Coldstream catches were also still quite quiet, Junction 3, Upper Hendersyde 2, Sprouston 3, Hendersyde 8, Birgham Dub 10, Lower Birgham 1 and West Learmouth 1 were the only beats between Kelso and Coldstream to get some sport.

Given the water height the fishing below Coldstream was a quiet this week, possibly due to a bit of colour in the water from the recent small rises. 16 fish were reported with he best of the catches were at Ladykirk 5 & Tweedhill 7.

Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “Difficult conditions with it being so bright but we picked away and ended the week with 8 Salmon, mostly fresh and some with lice”

On Birgham Dub, the Seaton party fished the first 3 days of week and took 8 fish with them. The Wooten party struggled later part of week getting one fish on an early morning start.

Mr Douglas Aitken fishing at Ladykirk & Cornhill reports “We were on Ladykirk and Cornhill this week. The very hot and bright conditions were not helpful and the river was very low and clear. We fished the tip stream on Wednesday and saw very few fish until 12pm when there was 20 minutes of activity but no takers. Cornhill was very low but always a pleasure to be there and have a chat with Brendan and Tam. I went back to Ladykirk on Saturday and managed to land a fish from the tip stream after trying every fly in the box! A hard week for all I think we need a proper flood.”

Mr Alex Knox, owner of the fabulous Contented Vine restaurant in Kelso landed a lovely 7lb Long Tailed Licer from the Cornhill best on Tuesday. If you’re in the area, we would highly recommend the Contented Vine for lovely food and great service.

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 2” and the water temperature is 64.

Looking at the availability for the upcoming week I would suggest West Learmouth, Pedwell, Horncliffe and Tweedhill beats should have a good chance of some action this coming week.

The forecast looks a bit better this week with some rain, cloud and a lot cooler than last week.

Water temperatures are starting to rise to a level where dressed flies in sizes 10 or 12 should be about right. Blacko’s Dee Special, Gledswood Shrimp, Ghillie, Underghillie, Girnal Shrimp and if you fancy giving a Sunray Shadow a strip it should bring success fished off floating lines with poly leaders, while on the spinning front the 13cm Blue Rapala, Black/Gold Rapala  Tobies in 12gm – 20gm and with the water temperature getting up a bit now the flying c should bring some success. As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie.
