River Tweed River Report Week Ending 9th February 2019 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 9th February

The opening day fishers were greeted sub-zero temperatures and a river full of grue, which made fishing in the morning near impossible. However as the day progressed the sun came out and conditions improved and at 13:50 the first salmon of the season was landed on the Upper North Wark beat by Mr Mike Graham.  The fish took Black and Yellow tube fly in Wark Dub with Ghillie Richard Farr on the oars.
Mikes’s fish was a lovely fresh springer weighing 7lbs and won him the Tweed Trophy, which was presented at Fin and Game Ltd in Kelso by Mr Tom Leslie who sponsored and hosted the event.

Another three fish were reported on Opening Day with Lower Floors, Carham and Hendersyde all landed one. Mr Ashley Temple fishing at Carham landed a stunning 15lbs fish while on Hendersyde Mr Paul Holland landed a fine fish of 9lbs, not to be done with his opening day fish, Paul landed another two springers on the 2nd weighing 14lbs and 9lbs. On the 3rd Birgham Dub got off and running with a lovely 8lb springer for Mark Jackson. On the 5th there was a foot rise which brought in a lot of colour and conditions remained unsettled with rising coloured water coming down the river the remainder of the week, making chances of catching very slim. The water is dropping back in today and prospects look good for a full weeks fishing on the river, so if they are there to be caught they should be this week.

After any fishing trip on the Tweed it’s always worth a trip to Kelso to enjoy a superb meal with great atmosphere in the fabulous Contented Vine restaurant. I would highly recommend it as a must visit during your trip. Call 01573 224777 to reserve your table.

Salmon and 0 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 8lb Salmon caught on the Birgham Dub beat.

On Upper North Wark, A good start to the season with an opening day fish for Mr Mike Graham from the Dub. Unfortunately the water conditions last week gave us dirty water near every day since Monday.

Dave Cowan secretary of Berwick and District Angling Association beat on the Whiteadder reports “Nothing to report from the Whiteadder this week. Water levels started the season where they left off last year at 3 inches. Whilst Tweed went into full flood on Saturday Whiteadder rose above a foot and a half which will drop in very quickly making it perfect for Monday”

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 10” and the water temperature is 45.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend the Hendersyde, Sprouston, Lower Birgham and Upper North Wark beats should have a chance of some action this week.

The forecast this coming week, Tuesday will be quite windy and cloudy with patchy rain sinking southwards. The rain will then push back northwards overnight. Wednesday and Thursday, the brisk southerly wind will continue to feed in cloud and there could be occasional rain or drizzle.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

With water levels dropping back from the flood and the temperature is around 38 degrees, Wet Cel 2 or equivalent sink rate line with various sinking poly leaders should cover most areas just now, possibly an Intermediate in some of the slower bits. Copper tubes in sizes ranging from 1” to 2” in the ever faithful Black and Yellow colour scheme should bring results. Tosh, Monkey and Gold Bodied Willie Gunn will be present in most places.

As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out www.taysalmonfly.co.uk
