River Tweed River Report Week Ending 16th February 2019 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 16th February

Finally a nice settled week with settled water and conditions and the fish numbers were promising going by the catches. The condition of the fish been caught is really good, brand new and well fed hopefully they continue to come in better numbers as the spring progresses. This week saw a couple of fish reported above Kelso with Upper Mertoun reported one on Thursday and Mr Jonathan Reddin catching the first of the season from Upper Floors. Hendersyde had the best fishing of the week with 6 landed to 18lbs, The Lees with 4 and Upper North Wark with 3 had good sport during the week,
Junction had 3 for the week with Mr Tom Pidhorodeckyj landing a fine12lb springer from the Junction Pool while Mr Rod Newton landed an 8lb fish from the Bridge Pool, both assisted by boatman Pud Murray.
On South Wark is was a good week for boatman Lee Ross, he caught the first fish from the beat this season from the Jefferies Pool on a 2” Black and Yellow copper tube and on Saturday he was on the oars as Mrs Lucinda Ewin landed her 1st Springer from Millers Hole using an 1” Black and Yellow tube fly.
Fishing at the Lees Mr Tony Bosomworth landed a lovely 10lb fish on a Black n Yellow Conehead from the Learmouth Stream and 7lb fish from the Cauld Stream. Mr Terry Harper also landed two stunning fish of 14lb and 12lbs.
Upper North Wark had a good week with 3 landed. Mr Hugh Newton landed the 1st for the week from the Back of the Isle on a 2” Temple Shrimp tube fly. On Friday Mr Eugene Brady landed a 9lb fish from the Snipe Pool on a Black and Yellow Flying C, not done with landing a springer on his first trip to the Tweed Eugene landed his 2nd of the day a lovely 6lb fish from the Mill Stream on a Copper Toby.

After any fishing trip on the Tweed it’s always worth a trip to Kelso to enjoy a superb meal with great atmosphere in the fabulous Contented Vine restaurant. I would highly recommend it as a must visit during your trip. Call 01573 224777 to reserve your table.

26 Salmon and 0 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 18lb Salmon caught on the Upper Hendersyde beat.

Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “Had a good start to our season with a fish on the opening day and have been lucky enough to have some cracking fish since. Wednesday past turned out to be very memorable with 4 springer’s, both rods landing 2 each. Friday was pretty special too with an 81 year old gentleman landing 2 double figure fish on the fly. He's taken the fly home to frame it”

South Wark boatman Mr Lee Ross reports “After the big rise of water at the weekend by Wednesday it was dropping in nicely for us, plenty of kelts getting caught and then the first springer on Thursday and another on Saturday, the good old black and yellow Doing the damage, on floating heads and sink 4/5 tips, a bit of a change from last February when it was 3’ and using sink 2/3 lines!”

On Upper North Wark, A good week for us with 3 springer’s landed. Mr Hugh Newton landed 1 on the fly on Monday and Mr Eugene Brady landed 2 on the spinner on Friday. Quite a few kelts in the beat that seem to be good decoys at the moment. We have been granted planning permission for our new fishing hut so moved are afoot to get the work arranged and timescales for building put in place.

Dave Cowan secretary of Berwick and District Angling Association beat on the Whiteadder reports “Whiteadder started the week at a foot above summer level and fished well. It dropped away to 6 inches by Saturday and although fish have been seen running over the ford at Bluestone there has been no reports of fish caught. River in good condition but few anglers out this week.

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 1ft 2” and the water temperature is 44.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend the Sprouston and Upper North Wark beats should have a chance of some action this week. With the warmer water temperature Rutherford could be worth a cast.

The forecast this coming week, On Monday it will be another breezy day with spells of sunshine, but also some showers pushing in from the west. The showers could be heavy with the risk of thunder. There will be the chance of showers on Tuesday morning, with rain becoming more persistent and widespread during the day. Windy, cloudy and wet overnight, with outbreaks of rain continuing during Wednesday. There will be the chance of some rain on Wednesday night but Thursday should be largely dry, perhaps with some bright spells. A very mild day. Dry on Thursday night.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

With water levels dropping with the recent dry weather and the temperature has went up to 44 degrees, Intermediate lines with various poly leaders with  Copper tubes in sizes ranging from 1” to 2” in the ever faithful Black and Yellow colour scheme should bring results. Tosh, Monkey and Gold Bodied Willie Gunn will be present in most places.

As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out www.taysalmonfly.co.uk
