River Tweed River Report Week Ending 19th May 2018 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 19th May

Another tough week with rather bright conditions with temperature getting near the 20’s most days of the week, with this the water level has continued to drop and is nearing summer level, which should suit the bottom beats if the fish start to appear.

Above Kelso 10 fish were reported, with Middle Pavilion 2, Middle Mertoun 3 and Rutherford 2 having the best of the fishing.

Between Kelso and Coldstream 18 fish were reported, Junction 5, Hendersyde 4 and Birgham Dub with 7 had the best of the fishing last week. Mr John Slapp fishing on the Junction landed his first salmon a lovely 10lber, while on the same beat Mr Bob Hesketh landed a nice fish from Hempseedford. On Hendersyde Professor Stuart Reid landed his first ever salmon a nice 10lber taken on the fly. Well done Guys.

Below Coldstream 15 fish were reported, Tillmouth 5 and Ladykirk 6 had the best of the fishing. Mr Jonathan Lane landed a lovely sea liced fish from Ladykirk on Saturday using the deadly Ghillie fly from www.taysalmonfly.co.uk. Well done Sir.

48 Salmon and 3 Sea Trout, with the best fish for the week was 13lb Salmon caught on the Hendersyde and Ladykirk Beat’s.

Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “A slow but steady week with the days getting a bit sunny for us and the river falling back to summer level as the week went on. The rods did manage to land 4 nice fish though. We had extra reason to celebrate on Tuesday when Professor Stuart Reid caught his first ever salmon, a nice 10lber on the fly. All things considered a good result given the conditions”

On Upper North Wark, Hot, bright and low water conditions didn’t really suit us onwards and upwards and a rain dance required!

Ladykirk Head Ghillie Mr Matthi Viethen reports “At last a better week for us with 10lb on Tuesday and 10lb on Thursday to same rod, and then 8lb & 12lb on Friday and syndicate rods had a good, but very bright Saturday afternoon with 10lb & 13lb. All cracking springer’s and all liced apart from 1.

Mr David Cowan secretary of Berwick and District Angling Association beat on the Whiteadder reports “BDAA had one fish for the week however with the Whiteadder at 5inches prospects for next week are not brilliant. Fish are moving in to the river but we need some water.

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 4” and the water temperature is 55.

Looking at the availability for this coming week I would recommend the Tweedhill, Horncliffe, Ladykirk and Pedwell, Rutherford beats should have a chance of a springer this week.

The forecast this coming week, It will be mainly dry but largely cloudy at first on Tuesday. However, it will brighten up with long sunny spells expected later in the day. Feeling cooler in moderate north-easterly winds. Wednesday and Thursday will be fine with plenty of sunshine and just a little cloud. It will feel increasingly warm. Some mist or low cloud may form after dusk.

As always I would like to thank all those who provide me with the information to make this report, it is very much appreciated. If you have any information or photo’s you would like included please get in touch with Martin on 07825334427 or info@taysalmonfly.co.uk

With water levels finally starting to drop in and water temperatures starting to rise Floating lines with poly leaders on the end should cover most fishing conditions at the moment. Dressed flies around a size 8 to 10 should be the order of the day,  I would suggest are Copper Cascade, Girnel Shrimp, Gledswood Shrimp, Underghillie and Sunray Shadow should bring success. If you like to give the spinner a go, Rapala, Toby or Flying C should bring results.

As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie. If you’re needing to top up your fly box ahead of your trip please check out www.taysalmonfly.co.uk

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 17th June 2017 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 17th June

After the much needed rain last week, the week began with quite a black peaty water, hopes were high after the rise in water that the fish would finally get a chance to get moving up the river. Fishing conditions were pretty good over the week with a bit of wind making it tricky in certain areas. The week proved to be the best week of the season so far with 189 Salmon and 47 Sea Trout reported. There has been a few more caught on non-reporting beats and with some beats now been onto Summer Lets the ghillie service is reduced with some not reporting online during this period. From the information online that I can gather the Season So Far total is 1308 Salmon and 225 Sea Trout.

Fish were caught throughout the system, above Kelso catches were well spread out with some good catches made on the Mertoun Beats with 27 and Upper Floors with 27 inc a great day of 12 on Tuesday. Middle Pavilion Had 3 for the week inc a nice fish for Mr Tim Briggs from the Boat Sheil.

Bemersyde Head Ghillie Mr Ian Farr reports “Not much happening up here, 4 Salmon and 1 Sea Trout for the week”

Mr Brian Douglas fishing at Lower Mertoun reports “Fished the first 3 days, 11 Salmon and 4 Sea Trout. On Monday took fish on the spinner then as the water cleared we were getting them on the fly. Carat Fly done best and Mr Neil Jones had a couple on the Kinermony Killer”

Makerstoun Head Boatman Mr Colin Pringle reports “8 Salmon and 1 Sea Trout. 87 year old Venetian Mario Morenos landed his first salmon on the fly, this was a change of tactics for Mario as he is an expert skin diver spear fisherman.”

Between Kelso and Coldstream catches improved this week with 61 fish reported in this area. Junction 16, Hendersyde 17 with the best of the catches, while the Wark area seen an improvement in catches with 14 fish landed. Mr Colin Tait had some good sport on Lower North Wark landing a nice fish and having a good few chases on an Editor Sunray Shadow from www.taysalmonfly.co.uk

Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “A good week, resulting from a lift at the start of the week. 17 Salmon mostly fresh and some sea trout starting to make an appearance. Biggest 14lbs”

With the water levels dropping in the beats below Coldstream managed to get back fishing and 20 fish were reported with the best of the catches were at Ladykirk 9 & Tillmouth 7.

Mr Jonathan Lane fishing on Ladykirk landed a fine salmon and sea trout on a ½” Ghillie Tube Fly from www.taysalmonfly.co.uk.

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 1ft and the water temperature is 60.
Looking at the availability for the upcoming week I would suggest Lennel, Ladykirk, Horncliffe and Tweedhill beats should have a good chance of some action this coming week.

The forecast this coming week looks fairly warm with light south westerly wind, there may be an odd shower on Wednesday but no real rain forecast for this coming week.

Water temperatures are starting to rise to a level where dressed flies in sizes 10 or 12 should be about right. Blacko’s Dee Special, Gledswood Shrimp, Ghillie, Underghillie, Editor Sunray Shadow, Editor and if you fancy giving a Sunray Shadow a strip it should bring success fished off floating lines with poly leaders, while on the spinning front the 13cm Blue Rapala, Black/Gold Rapala  Tobies in 12gm – 20gm and with the water temperature getting up a bit now the flying c should bring some success. As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie.

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 27th May 2017 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 27th May

The week started off with good fishing weather and some reasonable catches before we were hit with very hot and sunny weather from Wednesday. Temperatures reached 30 degrees in the second half of the week which made catching fish much harder, but the beats who were out fishing early while it was a bit cooler reported a few fish, many of them with sea liced.

Above Kelso catches were unsurprisingly quiet, Middle Mertoun having the best fishing with 9 for the week. Middle Pavillion 2 and Lower Pavillion with 4 also enjoyed the limited success.

Between Kelso and Coldstream catches were also still quite quiet, Junction 3, Upper Hendersyde 2, Sprouston 3, Hendersyde 8, Birgham Dub 10, Lower Birgham 1 and West Learmouth 1 were the only beats between Kelso and Coldstream to get some sport.

Given the water height the fishing below Coldstream was a quiet this week, possibly due to a bit of colour in the water from the recent small rises. 16 fish were reported with he best of the catches were at Ladykirk 5 & Tweedhill 7.

Hendersyde Head Boatman Ketch reports “Difficult conditions with it being so bright but we picked away and ended the week with 8 Salmon, mostly fresh and some with lice”

On Birgham Dub, the Seaton party fished the first 3 days of week and took 8 fish with them. The Wooten party struggled later part of week getting one fish on an early morning start.

Mr Douglas Aitken fishing at Ladykirk & Cornhill reports “We were on Ladykirk and Cornhill this week. The very hot and bright conditions were not helpful and the river was very low and clear. We fished the tip stream on Wednesday and saw very few fish until 12pm when there was 20 minutes of activity but no takers. Cornhill was very low but always a pleasure to be there and have a chat with Brendan and Tam. I went back to Ladykirk on Saturday and managed to land a fish from the tip stream after trying every fly in the box! A hard week for all I think we need a proper flood.”

Mr Alex Knox, owner of the fabulous Contented Vine restaurant in Kelso landed a lovely 7lb Long Tailed Licer from the Cornhill best on Tuesday. If you’re in the area, we would highly recommend the Contented Vine for lovely food and great service.

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 2” and the water temperature is 64.

Looking at the availability for the upcoming week I would suggest West Learmouth, Pedwell, Horncliffe and Tweedhill beats should have a good chance of some action this coming week.

The forecast looks a bit better this week with some rain, cloud and a lot cooler than last week.

Water temperatures are starting to rise to a level where dressed flies in sizes 10 or 12 should be about right. Blacko’s Dee Special, Gledswood Shrimp, Ghillie, Underghillie, Girnal Shrimp and if you fancy giving a Sunray Shadow a strip it should bring success fished off floating lines with poly leaders, while on the spinning front the 13cm Blue Rapala, Black/Gold Rapala  Tobies in 12gm – 20gm and with the water temperature getting up a bit now the flying c should bring some success. As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie.

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 6th May 2017 - Tay Salmon Fly

River Tweed River Report Week Ending 6th May

Water conditions are getting to summer level now, but with the big spring tides over last weekend some fish have entered the river, with the catches mainly coming from the bottom beats. 63 fish were reported for the week with some Sea Trout starting to appear as well. The mood on the river as a mix of anger and disbelief with the new circulating of the Gardo netting station down at Berwick killed 18 Spring Salmon on Monday.

The Junction beat had a decent week given the conditions and landed 10 fish. Mr Richard Thomas landed fish of 8lb and 15lb on Tuesday, Mr Neil O’Shea landed a 12lber while Tom O’Shea landed fish of 7lb and 6lb. Mr Keith Frances finishes of the week with a fine 8lber.

Between Kelso and Coldstream catches are still quite quiet, Sprouston 1, Hendersyde 4 and Birgham Dub 1, Lower Birgham 3, West Learmouth 2 were the only beats between Kelso and Coldstream to get some sport.

Those fishing below Coldstream faired a bit better in the lower water conditions with 27 fish reported.

Ladykirk reports “Conditions were hard with the east wind and cloudless skies the level is now very low but nothing to stop fish running should they wish. From what I saw or did not seem to be more accurate was very few fish. One or two rods were luck to find fish in the beat and as we know fresh spring fish are ready takers. We finished on 13 fish for the week. With no change in the weather for next week it will be same again

The week ended with the level at Sprouston 2” and the water temperature is 51.

Looking at the availability for the upcoming week I would suggest Pedwell, Ladykirk and Horncliffe beats should have a good chance of some action this coming week.

The next week the water levels are expected to remain pretty steady with the dry weather and cold nights we have had lately. The forecast looks quite settled with no significant rain in the forecast, and we could really do with wee lift would to freshen things up. Conditions are really good for the majority of beats towards the lower end of the river at the moment and given these lower water conditions I would expect fish to start being caught below Coldstream.

Water temperatures are starting to rise to a level where dressed flies in sizes 8 or 10 should be about right. Blacko’s Dee Special, Gledswood Shrimp, Ghillie, Underghillie, Girnal Shrimp and if you fancy giving a Sunray Shadow a strip it should bring success fished off floating lines with poly leaders, while on the spinning front the 13cm Blue Rapala, Black/Gold Rapala  Tobies in 18gm – 28gm and with the water temperature getting up a bit now the flying c should bring some success. As always come prepared and always listen to the advice of your boatman or ghillie.
